Yacht Registration Malta
Throughout the centuries, Malta has been an international jurisdiction for ship and yacht registration. Its geographical situation in the middle of the Mediterranean positions Malta in an ideal location for maritime business.
Any yacht owner can register the vessel under the Maltese Flag. Yachts can be registered as a Private Yacht or as a Commercial Yacht, depending on the purpose of the yacht and the characteristics of the yacht.
A private yacht is one which is in excess of 6 metres of length and one which is typically used for pleasure. On the other hand, commercial yachts are those which are at least 15 metres in length and which do not carry cargo and do not carry more than 12 passengers.
Malta is attractive to register yachts or boats also because of the tax benefits and the number of types of vessels that can be registered. These vary from yachts and super-yachts to cruise liners, including those that are still in construction.
Other benefits include:
Private yacht registration is subject to having all documentation in order. Vessels are registered provisionally under the Malta Flag for a period of six months until all documents are reviewed. The registration of the Commercial Yacht is similar to the Private Yacht but in this case the vessels must additionally comply with the requirements of the Commercial Yacht Code.
